Detectives, Explorers and Spies, Partners In Creative Learning – Project Artist (2008)
Detectives, Explorers and Spies was a visual arts and language and communications project in partnership with Partners In Creative Learning and a primary school in Stoke-on-Trent. This project’s focus was providing new experiences for children aged 7 to stimulate their vocabulary. The pupils lacked the broad experiences that gave them richer descriptive powers and creative skills, which limited their imagination and affected their expressive skills in storytelling.
A range of visual arts activities (drawing, printmaking and sculpture) helped to develop their observation skills and enabled a richer vocabulary to develop: one that came from exploring new things through the senses; sight, taste, smell and touch.
The work built towards a visit to a nature reserve, where they used their new skills and experiences: returning to school to make work for an interactive story showcase. The children were given a choice to how they created and presented their stories. They did so in a variety of ways including performance, reading stories, drawing, ideas for games and they showcased this work to other children in the school.
